I worked at Sandy Hook and found an awful lot of plastic along the bay. Largely the plastic caps of one specific brand of bottled water. If this stuff is on the beach it must be in the water and in the food chain as well.
This past March 24,2013, the Drag Island Access Preservation Association (DIAPA) and members of the BassBarn sponsored a clean-up of Drag Island (the island is located at the mouth of the Maurice River in Somers Point at the old Rt 9 Bridge) Over 50 local people and fishermen helped in the clean up this island and to show support for the need of foot access to this area. (Members of the NJBBA and RFA were also represented in this clean up.) However, this foot access depends upon the keeping open the flat bridge that connects Drag Island to the main land in Somers Point. Access to Drag Island has existed for over 85 years since the Beesley’s Point Bridge first opened in 1928. In recent years, this island has been a destination point for bird watching, nature walks and surf fishing. This part of the bridge along with a section from the Beesleys Point should be kept to provide both a destination point and a fishing pier as was done for the old Brigantine bridge and Longport Bridge. It should be noted that the pictured trash was NOT from Sandy debris or the fishing public but is river run off.
The members of the RFA and 3000 members of the NJBBA support the continued access to these areas because once lost we will never get them back. It is through the support of local grassroot groups, fishing clubs, and interested people that will help to preserve access to this area. If you are interested in helping save access, DIAPA has started an online petition atwww.ipetitions.com/petition/save-drag-island-access . DIAPA founders have met with politicians concerning this subject which has also received media attention by Channel 40 news and local newspapers. However, more support is necessary to make an impact. If access to this area is taken away, the public will suffer yet another example of progress taking priority over the rights of citizens.
